At the end of 2022 my sister and I both tested positive for a genetic mutation called CDH1. This gene significantly increases my chance of getting gastric cancer by 83% in a lifetime. Annual screening with a gastroscopy (taking biopsies of your stomach) is available. Unfortunately this have been proven not to be a reliable screening tool to detect this and often when it’s picked up it’s too late. The recommendation going forward as a prevention measure is a total gastrectomy which means complete removal of my stomach.
The good thing is that I otherwise have good health and this is the hurdle is will need to overcome.
